International schools in Johor Bahru: fees, boarding and the Singapore commute

Bigger campuses, boarding options and Singapore on the doorstep, usually for less than Singapore itself.

Reviewed September 2026 by Celeste, Bridgeway Education Advisory.

In short

Johor Bahru offers larger campuses and more boarding places than anywhere else in Malaysia, at fees below Singapore. Established schools run roughly RM 60,000 to RM 105,000 a year, with more affordable campuses from about RM 20,000. It suits families who want space, boarding, or a Singapore commute without Singapore fees.

Who Johor Bahru suits

Families who work in Singapore but want lower school fees and more living space. The causeway commute is real, so visit at the hour you would actually travel.

Parents considering boarding, either now or in the senior years. Johor has more boarding provision than anywhere else in Malaysia.

Families who want a large campus with proper sports facilities rather than a city school built upwards.

Curricula you'll find here

British

Most schools here follow it, through IGCSE into A Levels or the IB Diploma, including several sister campuses of UK schools.

International Baccalaureate

Available, though in fewer schools than KL. Ask how long the school has run the Diploma and what results look like.

American

A smaller presence, usually with Advanced Placement in the senior years.

What to budget

Fees sit below Singapore and slightly below central KL, but boarding, transport across the causeway and weekend travel add up.
